Concealed Weapons Permits

New Law Effective July 1, 2003

 

Meeting dates are usually the first Friday of each month at 10:00 am in the District Courtroom, 719 W. Chisholm St. Alpena, MI   49707.

 

Members are: Representatives from Prosecuting Attorney, Sheriff, Michigan State Police and Clerk’s Offices.  You are not required to appear at the Gun Board Meeting unless the Board has questions regarding your background check in which case you will be notified to appear, but as a public meeting you are welcome to attend.

Application packets are available from the County Clerk’s Office, Sheriff Department or local police agencies or printed from your computer. The packet will have the application, guidelines, a fingerprint card and a Claim of Appeal form.  Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, either a U.S. Citizen or resident alien and must have resided in this state for at least 6 months.  Applicants must meet certain criteria as to criminal history and mental illness and must provide proof of pistol training and safety programs from a certified firearm instructor.

1.      Applicant must file his/her application with the County Clerk in the county in which the individual resides.  This must include:

A.     A copy of the certificate of the pistol safety training course or for renewal of a license issued after July 1, 2001, the applicant must sign a statement certifying that he or she has completed at least 3 hours of review of the required training and have had at least 1 hour of firing range time in the last 6 months preceding this application.

B.     A passport quality photograph.

C.     $105.00 fee in cash or check payable to Alpena County Clerk. Renewal fee is the same.

2.      The County Clerk will provide a receipt for payment of fees.

3.      The applicant shall bring the receipt along with fingerprint card to the Sheriffs Department for fingerprinting on Fridays between 2 – 10 pm.

4.      The Sheriff Department will fingerprint the applicant and forward the fingerprints to the Michigan State Police for processing.

5.      The time frame for your finger prints to be returned is usually 5-7 weeks.

6.      Once the County Gun Board receives the fingerprint comparison report, they will issue or deny the license within 30 days.

7.      Applicant will receive a post card or denial letter from the Clerk’s office.

8.      The applicant can pick up the permit from County Clerk.  All licenses must be signed in the presence of the County Clerk Office.

9.      Lamination is available for a fee of $3.00

10.   If a permit is lost, a duplicate can be issued for $10.00

11.   The permit is valid for 5 years. You will not receive a notice of expiration, so you must remember to re-apply in about 4 ˝ years.

Below is a list of certified instructors in the Alpena area. This list may not be an all-inclusive list.  If you receive your certificate of training from someone else, you will need to provide the Gun Board with the name, address, telephone number, certification number and qualification and description of the course.
