On March 5th, at approximately 1:30am, Corrections Officers at the Alpena County Jail successfully managed an incident involving damage to a housing unit.
During their shift, a fire suppression head was tampered with and broken by an inmate, causing water to be deposited within the pod. Corrections Officers quickly reacted to the situation, moving inmates to a safe area while additional emergency services were dispatched. Alpena City Fire Dept., CRTC Fire Dept., and MSP Alpena all assisted. Subsequently, the fire suppression system was repaired and placed back into service.
Due to the Corrections Officers quick response, the incident remained isolated within that housing area. Water damage in the cell is currently being mitigated and fans are being used to dry the affected area.
This incident has resulted in a criminal investigation, which will be submitted to the Alpena County Prosecutors Office, seeking charges and restitution.
